Merry Critmas from the Samurai Snowmen!

Two colors dominate this image: the red of blood and schoolwork, and the black of darkness, hair and eyes. What I get from this is not the usual idea that school sucks but instead that schoolwork takes a certain amount of lifeblood to do, while an inherent darkness in them spills out and hides their hard work. They can do the work but something in them has to ruin it. And all that red in the background implies they have given everything they have; what others need to do is see that effort and look past the darkness.

I like the hair, the dark eyes, the red cheeks – they create a heavy emotional impact which sets the tone for a deeper idea. Strangely the hands don't seem to be doing much. They are wonderfully detailed but don't feel connected to anything else, as if you could erase them and not change the theme.

I see two issues. First, this person sits very low in the desk but doesn't appear to be slouching, which makes the body proportions look off. When I sit at a desk it's down around my stomach, not my chest. Second, the line of their upper right arm fits exactly to the side of the desk, which makes the arm look flat like the desk, not rounded like the lower arm.

Vision: Please see past my darkness because I am trying my hardest.

Originality: What I expected was the old “School sucks” theme but there is more to this.

Technique: Great details and focus to the image, a few issues.

Impact: The image takes a while but does make me think.
